The apostle Paul had previously written to the church in Thessalonica to encourage and inspire them to faithfulness as they looked for the return of Christ. Apparently, only a short time after writing his first letter, Paul was compelled to write a second letter similar in theme. In difficult circumstances and confusion regarding the return of Christ, Paul recognized the faithfulness of the Thessalonians and wanted them to face difficulties with undaunted courage.
